A Celebration of Literacy and Imagination at Bulmershe

The Bulmershe School was recently transformed into a hub of literary creativity as we celebrated World Book Day. From professional author workshops to immersive library displays, the day provided a platform to highlight our ongoing commitment to literacy and reading for pleasure.

Why Literacy Matters

At Bulmershe, literacy is more than just a subject; it is the cornerstone of our academic ethos. We know that a strong reading age is the single most important factor in a student’s ability to access the curriculum and succeed in their GCSEs. By fostering a reading culture, we ensure that our students develop the vocabulary and comprehension skills necessary for life beyond school.

Author Visits and Creative Workshops

We kicked off the day with an online comic drawing workshop, where students learnt the intricate art of Manga and discussed the storytelling power of graphic novels.

Following this, we welcomed the celebrated author Sophie Cleverly. Known for her best-selling Scarlet and Ivy mystery series, Sophie shared fascinating insights into the world of publishing. She taught our budding writers how to construct a gripping mystery, did a reading from her latest work and gave practical tips on how to turn an idea into a novel. Our students were incredibly engaged, asking brilliant questions about her journey to becoming a professional author.

Creative Competitions and Staff Transformations

The school corridors became a gallery of childhood favourites during our Tutor Room Door Decorating Competition. Many groups opted for a nostalgic theme, with designs featuring he Lorax, The Chronicles of Narnia and Gangsta Granny. The winning groups walked away with some very large bags of sweets for their efforts!

The staff also fully embraced the day. The Science department appeared as David Attenborough accompanied by a variety of animals, while the Communication and Performing Arts team joined forces to recreate the Wizard of Oz.

Willy Wonka’s Library and The After-School Party

The heart of the celebrations was undoubtedly the library, which Miss Marr and the Student Library Assistants transformed into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The display included giant golden tickets, oversized sweets and a spectacular chocolate waterfall. Throughout the day, a photobooth allowed students to capture memories of the event with their friends.

The festivities concluded with an after-school World Book Day party. It was wonderful to see so many students  enjoying refreshments and celebrating together.

We would like to thank everyone who made teh day such a success. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of this week on our students' reading journeys!
